Extended Use of 30mA Devices

Regulation 411.3.3 is revised, it now requires additional protection by use of a 30mA Device on socket outlets (up to 32A rating) in locations where they are liable to be used by persons of BA1, BA2 & BA3 capability i.e. ordinary persons, children, and disabled persons. This applies to all installations. No exceptions permitted.

The term 'RCD' includes devices such as 'RCCB', 'RCBO', 'CBR' and 'MRCD'. The term 'RCD' is often mis-understood. For example, providing additional protection in accordance with 415.1.1 is not intended to promote grouping several circuits on one 30mA RCCB because this is very unlikely to comply with power continuity requirements or meet section 314. Using RCBOs on individual final circuits will meet power continuity requirements and comply with section 314.

Outdoor lighting that is accessible to the public now requires additional protection by 30mA RCD or RCBO, for example in gardens, spaces open to the public (in addition to previous requirements for ) telephone kiosks, bus shelters & advertising panels & town plans.

Regulation 531.3.2 is amended – it now specifically mentions (where additional protection is provided by 30mA device) avoiding unwanted tripping by use of RCBOs in design considerations for individual final circuits in residential premises, and refers to Regulation 314.1 Regulation 314.1 requires every installation to be divided into circuits, as necessary to avoid danger in the event of a fault, reduce the possibility of unwanted tripping of RCDs due to excessive protective conductor (PE) currents.

Type AC RCDs can now only be used to serve fixed equipment, where it is known that the load current contains no DC components. For example simple electric heating, or filament lighting equipment without any electronic components, see regulation 531.3.2
